I was in Mexico at the beginning of my year abroad from Birmingham University, where I studied Spanish.
With a Mexican friend I went to the game. Mexico had to win to progress to the next round of qualifying. Canada needed to draw. At the time, the stadium capacity was much bigger and there was around 110,000 at the game. Now I am tall and, when I was 20, had bright ginger hair so clearly not Mexican.
Mexico took an early lead and the crowd went wild. Canada, however, equalised around the 70th minute (iirc). At this point I started to get a lot of attention from those around me but my friend reassured me that nothing would happen at all, which turned out to be correct.
I had some abuse hurled at me from a paasing car passenger as we made our way towards a bus stop after the game and that was it.
